August 2004 Ribbon Judging

What do you do with your orchids if a hurricane threatens? If you don't have too many, then you can stuff them in your house or garage. If you have a large collection and no extra space, lay them on the ground against the house so they don't become projectiles and the neighbors down the street don't get all your orchids. This will also minimize physical damage to the leaves. Don't forget to liberally sprinkle snail bait all around your plants. When winds subside, get them back on their benches and off the ground.

Dana Greenberg received a culture for a large, well-grown Cattleya bowringiana. It had 16 inflorescences supporting 112 flowers. Flowers were lavender with a deep purple lip, which is typical for the species. Valerie & David received the EEOS Award for silver (81 points) for extremely large flowers on their Aerides Korat Koki. Congratulations, Dana, Valerie, and David.

Now is a good time to start grooming your orchids for our upcoming show. Along with AOS judging, we will also ribbon judge our members' plants. Orchids awarded will receive double points towards the end of year totals. Don't forget to continue fertilizing, grooming, and staking your prize-winning orchids.
