June 2008 Ribbon Judging

Sometimes we think it can get so hot that our orchids would like to be in the air conditioning with us!  Well, you’re right, with some of the orchids. Many of the Sophronitis cattleya hybrids would like to feel cooler evenings in the summer. Many Oncidiums, Miltonias, and Odontoglossum hybrids like it a little cooler. Just look at some of the awarded orchids that are grown in the northern part of the country, and you will find many of them don’t do very well down here. These northern plants have a greater temperature change from day to night than what we can offer. Orchids that are found naturally at higher elevations, say above 2500 feet, do not grow well in South Florida and are more of a challenge to keep alive.

However, our Vandaceous Orchids seem to thrive in our summer heat and humidity, and do just fine. Many awarded Vandas and Ascocendas come from Florida and other areas, where warm is the norm and cool summers are unheard of.
