Hurricane season is upon us. Be prepared to move your orchids, if
a storm threatens.
If your collection is small, you can move them into
your garage for a day or so. If
you do, watch the temperature and don’t let the garage get too hot. Run a fan, if you have to.
If your collection is larger and the plants must
stay outdoors or on your back patio, remove them from any hanging position or
bench and lay on the ground. You
don’t want your neighbor down the street to suddenly find your orchids in
their yard…and claim them as a “gift from the gods”!! If you do put them on the ground in a
protected area, remember to liberally sprinkle snail bait over the plants and
surrounding area. It is a guarantee snails will be looking for your orchids in the warm, damp environment during
& after a storm.
Try to move your plants back to their original
places as soon as the wind lets up. You can inspect each plant for physical damage at this time. If you can, run a fan to help dry
them out. If you use chemicals,
now would be a good time to use on your orchids to help stop bacteria and rot.
