In 1969, members of the Comité Latinoamericano de Orquideología [Latin American Committee on Orchid Culture], through Ms. Helena Baraya de Ospina, President of the Sociedad Colombiana de Orquideología [Colombian Orchid Society] at the time, proposed the idea of creating in Costa Rica an organization that would gather all persons interested in the culture and conservation of orchids. Thus was born the Asociación Costarricense de Orquideología. The society's bylaws were approved in July of 1970 and it was incorporated in the same year. In 1971 the society put on its first show with a total of 147 plants. It has grown since then; it's last orchid show had on display over 1,400 plants. Web site in Spanish only. |

Associação Orquidófila de São Paulo (AOSP) began meeting in 1967 with a little over 40 members. Orchid Lovers Society is the translation of its first name in Japanese. At the time, there were already other orchid clubs in Sao Paulo, such as the Círculo Paulista de Orquidófilos (CPO) and the Sociedade Bandeirante de Orquídeas (SBO), both of them very respected organizations. This group of Japanese immigrants - among them some dissidents from other clubs - got together and dared to create their own society to exchange ideas on the culture of orchids, taking the first steps to form the AOSP.
