To paraphrase a kindly old philosopher I once knew, it's possible to grow orchids on your own, but not nearly as much fun as it should be. In 1979, fourteen local orchid enthusiasts met to discuss orchid horticulture and the possibility of organizing a formal group. By 1980 the Susquehanna Orchid Society was officially affiliated with the American Orchid Society, and soon thereafter, the Eastern Orchid Congress and Orchid Digest Corporation. Today the society consists of over 80 members from all over the lower Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania. Its members are divided almost equally between greenhouse and home growers, and specialize in a wide diversity of orchids, from Phals and Catts, to Paphs, Phrags, Pleurothallids and of course, the potpourri collection. Guests are always welcome at their meetings. |
