Born in Zimbabwe, Africa, Daryl studied at Christian Brothers College and obtained A Levels (Advanced Levels) in Accounting, Business Management and English Literature. He started growing orchids at the age of 8 when he had to accompany his father to an orchid show to supply a subordinate with paperwork that needed to be signed. That's when he fell in love with their fragrance (primarily Dendrobium kingianum).

Daryl grew an assortment of orchids, but concentrated on African and Madagascan species, Vandas, Paphiopedilums, and Nobile Type Dendrobiums. He won first award at the age of 10 for a Paphiopedilum Tyron Rathbone which won Best in Show and Best Paphiopedilum in show (first time blooming seedling). He supplied the local market with orchids, African Violets and Rex Begonias for a number of years until he graduated and moved to the United States in 1998 to further his studies in business, and recently changed studies to International Law.

Daryl is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker and we haven't had a speaker on Vandas for some time.
