Tonight's Program:
Jean Wilson
How to Grow Your Plant Into a Specimen

Jean Wilson Jean has been growing orchids for a long time. As a teenager, she used to visit her Grandmother in South Miami over winter breaks and was taken to the now gone Orchid Jungle. She soon had a collection of windowsill Cattleyas in New York.

A move to Hawaii for 4 years in the 1970’s reawakened that interest and lead her into local orchid culture classes. About 30 orchids, mostly cattleyas, moved with her to Ct and survived there for 5 years before coming gratefully to Miami.

Jean’s second passion, photography, is becoming as well-known as her specimen plants. She has belonged for many years to several orchid clubs and presently takes pictures at the meetings for four clubs. Jean enjoys her collection of orchid photos and keeps hoping she will come to restrict herself to photography and stop buying more plants!

Jean has always admired specimen plants, and prefers plants with smaller flowers but lots of them. Most of these bloom just once a year but put on a big show when they do it! She has several AOS awards for Culture as well as flower quality.

Jean is a retired Pediatric Physical Therapist with 2 grown daughters, one of whom has moved back to Hawaii. The other daughter in North Carolina has provided her with three wonderful grandchildren. Her husband Paul is a professor at UM, who is not at all interested in plants or orchids, but almost uncomplainingly helps whenever needed with building, carrying, and cold and hurricane rescue operations.

This very knowledgeable and interesting orchid grower has much to share with us. You do not want to miss her presentation!

Come and join us as we explore this wonderful group of plants.
